He was the son of Archibald "MacLachlin" McPhail and Lillias Mackenzie. He married Christina McCallum May 20, 1822 in Kilmartin, ARL, SCT.
Christina McCallum, born 1801 in Stockavullin, Kilmartin, ARL, SCT; died 1876 in Beverly Twp.,
ONT, CAN. She was the daughter of Alexander McCallum and Ann Jackson.

Notes for Dugald McPhail:
!BIRTH: Info from his family Bible, held by Loma Milne.

!MARRIAGE: Info from Kilmartin parish Register, official copy held by L. M.

!DEATH: Info from his gravestone and death certificate, Ont. Reg. # 1886-05-020152, official copy held by Loma Milne.

Dugald's father intended him for the medical profession but "Dugald's heart as in the land." He was considered a good Gaelic, as well as an English, scholar; info from a letter written in 1926 by his granddaughter, Mary Jackson.

Occupation: farmer. He was tenant farmer at Euroch Farm, Kilmartin parish, and head shepherd for his landlord, the Malcolm's of Poltalloch and Duntroon Castle ( the longest inhabited castle in Scotland ) Col. Malcolm showed the records of Euroch Farm to Dugald's gr-grandson, John McPhail, in 1975.

Euroch means "Place of the Yew tree" and it is a very rocky, hilly area, beside the road to Loch Awe. The sun does not reach the house for three months every winter, the hillsides are covered with sphagnum moss, and there is only about 5 acres of level land on the whole place. In the 1800s the level land in the valley near the church, and Nether Lergie, was covered with about 4 feet of peat. The original barn at Euroch Farm is still there, but the house, although old, has been altered since the Ordnance Survey in 1865.

Dugald and all his family emigrated to Canada, leaving from Greenock in June 1847, and settling on Lot 30, Con. 9 of Beverly Twp., Wentworth Co., in Oct. 1847. His descendants still own and farm this land.

Dugald visited his youngest brother, John, in Jamaica once. He returned with a barrel of rum, as a gift. His wife allowed him to keep a bit to treat the neighbors, but the rest was poured into Hamilton Bay! The Jamaica family still keeps in touch and visits Canada quite regularly.

Family tradition says that one of Dugald's brothers emigrated to California (although another branch of the family says he went to Australia!) and another emigrated to P.E.I. Goodness knows there are a lot of McPhail's on "the Island" and one of them became Speaker of the Legislature there.

The McPhail family that settled at Campbellsville also was closely related, perhaps another brother, and the two families visited back and forth for several generations.

Also a sister came to Canada and married a Gillies here. One of her descendants, James Gillies, became a Cabinet Minister in the Mulroney years. The Gillies also kept in close touch with the Jamaica branch of the McPhail's.

It would be almost impossible to prove these family relationships for the Kilmartin parish Register "is wanting" for the crucial years covering the birth of most of these siblings. We must rely on family tradition --- a notoriously weak support!

Children of Dugald McPhail and Christina McCallum are:
  1. Ann McPhail, born March 07,1823 in Kilmartin, ARL, SCT; died 1902 in Beverly Twp., ONT. CAN; married Duncan Gillies June 24,1843 in Glasgow, SCT.

!BIRTH: From her parents family Bible, and from the Kilmartin parish
Register. Official copy and Bible held by Lorna Milne.

!MARRIAGE: From the 1865 Wentworth Co. Marriage Register.

!DEATH: Ont. Reg. # 1920-05-017163. Official copy of death certificate held by
    Lorna Milne.

Emigrated in 1847, leaving Greenock, Scotland, in June, and settling in
Beverly Twp., Wentworth Co., with her parents.

Mary married her brother Alex's first wife's (Agnes Fettes's) brother, so they probably met while she was visiting her brother, who had settled in Proton Twp., Grey Co.

She and her husband settled on Lot 23, Con. 14 of Edgemont Twp., Grey Co. They built a beautiful stone house, and raised 9 children there. Four other children died young. Two of their sons returned to school as adults, and became MDs, one going on to become a specialist. One daughter became a nurse, and was Superintendent of Nurses at Durham Hospital. Another- daughter became a school teacher.

The Fettes's were a very strict, stern (dour!) lot and Mary and her children made their fun whenever "old Fettes" was away. They would move the furniture, roll up the rug, and have a dance, while someone kept watch from the window to warn them when he was coming home! Shortly after they were married, Mary complained to her husband about the distance she had to go to fetch water from the spring, for the farm cattle. His response was not to dig a well closer to the house, but to make her a yoke, so that she could carry four pails at once!

  12. larmel McPhail, born August 02, 1846 in Euroch Farm, Kilmartin, ARL, SCT; died Bef 1847 in Kilmartin, ARL, SCT.

Generation No. 7

Archibald "MacLachlin" McPhail, born ABT. 1762 in ARL, SCT; died Ail. 1841 in Kilmartin, ARL,
SCT. He married Lillias Mackenzie April 09, 1792 in Kilmartin, ARL, SCT.
Lillias Mackenzie, died December 1817 in Kilmartin, ARL, SCT. She was the daughter of
Donald MCKENZIE and Margaret MCINTYRE.

Notes for Archibald "MacLachlin" McPhail:
!BIRTH: Estimated from the 1841 census of Kilmartin Parish, ARL, SCT.

!MARRIAGE: From the Kilmartin parish Registers, official copy held by Lorna
Milne.

!DEATH: Sometime between the 1841 census, and June 1847, when his son Dugald
left for Canada.

OCCUPATION: - Probably a shepherd for the Malcolm's of Poltalloch and Duntroon Castle. Possibly at Camassarie. There is some family connection with Camassarie, as mentioned in his great grandson's (John Herman McPhail) obituary in the Jamaica Gleaner. He must have been an educated man, for he married the school-master's only daughter, and intended one son for the medical profession, and the youngest son for the ministry.

Notes for Lillias Mackenzie:
!BIRTH: from Kilmartin parish Registers, official copy held by Lorna Milne.

!MARRIAGE: from above, official copy held by L. M.

!DEATH: from gravestone in Kilmartin churchyard.

Called 'Lilly'.

  3. Isabella McPhail, born ABT. 1808 in Kilmartin, ARL, SCT; died August ;@8, 1876 in Nassagaweya Twp., ONT, CAN; married John Gillies.

    Notes for Isabella McPhail:
The fact that the Parish Register was not kept in Kilmartin during the years that Archibald McPhail's and Lillias McKenzie's family was being born and baptized means that the relationship between Isabella McPhail and Archibald "McLaughlin" MacPhail will probably remain unproven. We do know that there were quite a few children in his family, and that it was the only family of McPhail's in the Kilmartin Parish at that time. We also know, from her gravestone, that Isabella was born in Kilmartin.

However, a strong family tradition in both the McPhail (Jamaican and Canadian branches) and the Gillies family says that there was a very close relationship between their two families. Whenever the Jamaican family visited their McPhail relatives in Canada they also visited the Gillies at Teeswater, and the family of John Gillies (I 843-1905) recall that "his uncle John McPhail wanted him to go to Jamaica but his wife would not go because they would have to send the children away to school.
  4. John McPhail, born March 13, 1813 in Kilmartin, ARL, SCT; died January 17, 1887 in Jamaica; married Ella McFadyen Hall May 17, 1853 in Jamaica.

    Notes for John McPhail:
John McPhail emigrated to Jamaica in 1840. By 1846 he was a Lieutenant there in the Middlesex Home Militia. He became Postmaster at Rodney Hall in 1847 and was made Justice of the Peace in 1854, for St. Thomas yeVale. He obtained title to Tulloch Farm in 1864, buying it from the Davidson's of Scotland. In the 1980s his family was still farming that land.

John became quite well-off, and the family often traveled back and forth to Scotland, as well as visiting their Canadian relatives. Since the Parish Register for Kilmartin Parish "is wanting" from 1795 to about 1825, he had his own birth added to the Register on one of his visits home, "by order of the Synod."
