Dear McPhail Researchers:

Please retain this search for future advances in Kilmartin parish findings on behalf of aiding research on the first American McPhail related to the Geddie's (so far as is known):

We understand Catherine is not part of the original Argyll McPhail migration to NC in 1739. Catherine Isabella McPhail would have been born c. 1750-1755 in the Euroch community, Kilmartin; her brother Dugald born c.1755-1760. Catherine passed away in Cumberland County NC in 1830 and is buried there, but no trace has been found of her parentage. The Euroch location appears to be the research of Jack Geddie in his 1959 work THE FAMILIES GEDDIE-McPhail. Complete text of this work is on Links Page at GeddieWorld:

What is traditionally known is quoted from recent Argyll List post of Jasper McPhail:

"Isabella McPhail and two younger brothers from Euroch Farm in Kilmartin, Argyllshire, Scotland immigrated to Cape Fear, North Carolina in 1772 aboard a shipload of Geddie and Maxwell families. Aboard ship Isabella married James Daniel Geddie. Her brothers were Daniel and Dougald. They settled in the Cape Fear area near what is now Fayetteville, NC. In 1852,descendants of the Geddies and McPhails migrated to VanZandt County, Texas. Many of their graves are there, mostly around Colfax, Texas just east of Dallas."

Many thanks, Lawrence

There is an Archibald McCollum who had land and had maybe resided some time before 1767 in the Town of Argyll, Albany County, New York. The following is a synopsis of his will made in Rye, Westchester County, New York, as found in "Early Wills of Westchester County, New York, from 1664 to 1784," by William S. Pelletreau (1898), page 265: “Archibald McCollum, Rye. Leaves to sons John and Ellason ‘all my lot in Albany County on the east side of Hudson’s River, called the Township of Argyle, which was conveyed to me by Duncan Reid, Peter Middleton and others.’ Legacies to daughter Mary and grand son Samuel. Will dated May 18, 1767; proved Aug. 22, 1768.” John McCollum, son of Archibald, mentioned above, was a strident Loyalist in Rye, Westchester Co., NY, before and during the American Revolution. Whether he left for Nova Scotia in 1783 I have not researched, although some McCollums (Andrew, John (2), Mathew, Robert) are listed in the 1790 US Census in Ulster County, NY, and a McCollum family is in Rye, Westchester, NY, in the early 1800's. Others in the 1790 US Census for NY. Archebald McCullum - NYC Henry McCullum - North Castle Westchester, Co. Hugh McCullum - Schenectady, Albany Co. James McCollum - Beekman, Dutchess Co.
