The "Eve" of the American Geddie family is known to be Catherine Isabella McPhail d.1830 Cumberland County NC. She married James Daniel/Donald Geddie reportedly aboard ship crossing to Cape Fear in 1772. There is no (current) trace of her (or his) parentage or Scots location. We believe Kilmartin is a strong possibility, and would appreciate any primary document search for her if visitors have access to Kilmartin parish or civil records. CATHERINE sailed with her two younger brothers, Dougald McPhail d.1839 NC and Daniel (further not known). According to Jack Geddie's THE FAMILIES GEDDIE-McPHAIL (1959), most of the 1772 ship's passengers were MAXWELLS.

The many American McPhail's related to Geddie's may be seen at GeddieWorld:

Thank you, Lawrence Georgia, USA

P.S.- Only a tad off-topic -- although the surname PHAIL is not given on the site as a variant, we have learned that in North Carolina are PHAIL family members who know their ancestral surname was originally Mc/MacPHAIL.

Archibald McCallum (born 1860) was my great-grandfather. In 1881, he was training as a teacher in Glasgow. He married Margaret Ross McKenzie Matheson in about 1894, and they moved to Balallan on the island of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, where their first three children, Archibald, Christina and Emma were born. They then moved to Ballachulish in Argyllshire, and had a further six children - Hugh, Anne, Isabella, Margaret, Sarah and Donald (my grandfather, who was born in 1915). When Archibald McCallum Snr retired, the family moved to Edinburgh, and my grandfather went to George Watson's college. Archibald McCallum Snr died in 1931 (I think of a stroke brought on by a chill after falling over while iceskating(!)) I would be very interested to hear which branch of the family your neighbour belongs to, and whether he can tell me about the family any further back than the mid 1800s
