28. Dugald4 McPhail (Alexander3, Dugald2, Archibald "Maclachlin"1) was born in Proton Twp., Ont., Can. November 19, 1864. Dugald died January 17, 1930 in Proton Twp., Ont., Can., at 65 years of age.
He married Henrietta Campbell in Esplin, Grey Co. Ont., Can., March 18, 1889. The following individual is also linked to this event: John Morrison (minister). Henrietta was born in Proton Twp., Ont., Can. January 09, 1864. Henrietta was the daughter of John C Campbell and Jean Black. Henrietta died September 24, 1937 in Ceylon, Ont., Can., at 73 years of age. Dugald McPhail and his wife began to farm on lot 7, con. 12, Proton on a 100 acre farm which was a low, poor one, with a log house and barn and having poor implements. In 1892 he built a frame barn, size of barn 50 bY 55 feet, long posts, Bill and Tom Campbell doing the framing.
While in Proton he took out an auctioneer's license, in 1897. He excelled as an auctioneer, being a good salesman, good appearance, good voice, and was a good judge of cattle, horses, pigs, sheep, etc. His first sale was for Joe Maxwell, Feb. 27, 1897.
They sold their farm in Proton to George Shann in 1904; and purchased as 150 acre farm in Artemisa, one mile from Ceylon and the C.P.R.railway; this was a much better farm than the one in Proton, being bigger, had some good bush worth some money; farm was fertile.
He continued to auctioneer and got a lot of sales. Bought and fed or pastured cattle making a lot of money in this way. He had real good buildings on this place and from the time he went onto it he prospered.
Selling farm sales in all kinds of weather and driving to and fro and from sales in all kinds of roads and keeping up the work on the farm at the same time was too much for the constitution and his health gave way in 1923, and he has had poor health since, He sold the farm in the fall of 1926, had a sale, and bought a residence in Ceylon and also two lots for a chicken farm. Both his health and that of his wife's has improved since leaving the farm.
He educated his family, Agnes and Lillian to be school teachers and Gertha in music.
Dugald McPhail and Henrietta Campbell had the following children:

Agnes Campbell5 MacPhail was born in Proton Twp., Ont., Can. March 24, 1890.
Agnes died February 13, 1954 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, at 63 years of age. Her body was interred February 16, 1954 in
Priceville, Ontario, Canada, McNeil Cemetery. A storm raged that Thursday; visibility was poor; side roads were blocked and main
roads barely passable. Trains were hours late. Agnes Campbell MacPhail was the oldest daughter of Dugald McPhail and his wife Henrietta. She
went to school in Proton twp., but also went to the school in Artemisia after they moved out there; later going to the High School in Owen
Sound. She taught in the Boothville school, and also in Bruce County, and in the west in Alberta, at Greenmound school, south of Oyen,
Alta.
While teaching in York Co. Ont. she took an interest in politics and was the choice of the United Farmers of Ontario convention in Durham for the riding of South Grey. In the ensuing election which was in 1921, she polled 6958 votes; Hall, the conservative candidate polled 4360 and Hastie (liberal), polled 2638. Her majority over Hall being 2598. She had within 40 votes of having as many votes, as her two opponents combined. Agnes became the first woman member of the Dominion House of Commons in Canada. In the summer of 1925 an election being due, the Conservatives in South Grey were unable to secure a candidate to oppose Agnes, and so held a picnic at Eugenia and asked their leader, Arthur Meighen to be their candidate for them; but he had his plans matured and they secured a Mr. Campbell of Markdale as a candidate. She beat him by a huge majority. Another election was held in 1926 her opponent being a Mr. Edwards, a strong man and a good candidate and he had no sins to answer for, and had strong backing and help from all over. Bets were placed that he would win and all kinds of bets were made on the election from every angle . Two men in Dundalk placed a bet that one would pay the other $ 1.00 for every vote Agnes would have of a majority, and the other man to pay the same amount for every vote that Edwards would have of a majority. Agnes had majority of 1500.
